PROJECT MONITORING / AIR SAMPLING

Abatement of asbestos containing material (ACM) requires the disburbance of ACM which in turn causes the asbestos fibers to be released into the air.  Contractors and the immediate environment must be properly protected during the abatement process.

An asbestos project monitor is educated in the method and techniques for selecting the proper air sample collection sites as well as the collection, handling, recording and chain of custody procedures for obtaining air samples.  They are also certified in donning/doffing and inspecting personal protective equipment and recognizing safety hazards.  Additionally, project monitors are qualified in the equipment and techniques utilized in air sampling.  Upon completion of an authorized training program, the State issues a certification as an Asbestos Project Monitor / Air Sampling Technician.

The asbestos project monitor serves as the property owner's representative to supervise the asbestos abatement ensuring the work is performed in compliance with federal, state and local rules and regulations.  The environment must be inspected during abatement and following the completion of abatement work.

It is important to know that an asbestos project monitor cannot be affiliated with an asbestos abatement contractor.
